Apparently the whole “texting pictures of signs of life mice in the apartment” to my landlord every three minutes has become too much, and she’s decided to sell the place while I’m still living in it.
I guess the benefit of never having had time to really decorate of this is the surprise addition of a patio table on my porch for ‘staging’ purposes.
Never one to waste any time (except when making trivial decisions like what kind of cereal to buy) I immediately determined that the Eggless Tomato Quiche in Breton Gluten-Free Cracker & Almond Crust experiment was going to take place on my porch that evening.
After all, the Professor’s attempts at patio furniture are precious,* but we needed to take advantage of the opportunity to use a real table, no?
*Truth: The first time I came outside to find the carpenter’s bench set as a table, I thought it was pretty creative on his part. So creative and quirky that I’m not pushing too hard for a real table to be purchased…at least not immediately.
(Luckily, the Southwestern Shrimp ‘n’ Hominy Grits with homemade margaritas consumed at his place for Cuatro de Mayo didn’t require much by way of table space.)
There is a fine window of opportunity once spring arrives when the air is still just slightly crisp enough first thing in the morning that you can still eat your (kefir) oatmeal al fresco…
…before the sun has become too strong that you find yourself sweating (and the chocolate chips in your Love Grown Foods granola melting) into your cereal bowl.
But once the humidity sets in here in Alabama [around 8:30 in the morning, usually ;)] it’s better to stick with foods that aren’t quite so hot.
Like this beautiful feast of local tomatoes, orange and white sweet potatoes, and eggs from the farmer’s market.
Runny eggs are always welcome.
(Well, OK, except for maybe when it’s over 87 degrees and the only thing that tastes good is a not-like-the-restaurant tropical Cheribundi Cherry Mango smoothie.)
Or you can forget eating outside altogether and just drink outside.
Diet Coke always tastes better outside, you know it’s true.
(Or perhaps a one or two of my favorite cocktails in town, “The Destin,” featuring grapefruit juice, prosecco, and vodka?)
I know, I know, you’re thinking, “But don’t you drink smoothies?”
Not so, little chickadees, not so.
Triple-thick, made with frozen bananas and peaches, Growing Naturals protein smoothies are unable to be simply sipped.*
*They are slurped with a spoon.
There’s just something so [fill in the blank with your own feeling about the situation] about eating outside, don’t y’all think?
